They Didn’t Follow the Path—They Forged the Way - Celebrating 50 Years of Women’s Olympic Rowing
September 19 was a very special day for Capital Crew Masters as we gathered to celebrate a remarkable milestone and honor two extraordinary fellow rowers, Sue Morgan Hooten and Claudia Schneider.
Fifty years ago, in 1976, women’s rowing made its Olympic debut at the Montreal Games. Sue and Claudia were among the pioneering women who helped make history as members of the first U.S. women’s Olympic rowing team.
They didn’t follow the path—they forged the way.
Their journey was about much more than competing at the Olympics. They were part of a generation of women who stepped into new territory, broke barriers and opened doors for the many female rowers who would follow.
It was an honor for Capital Crew Masters to celebrate their accomplishments and hear firsthand about their experiences leading up to and participating in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.
