What the Learn to Row Clinic Offered

The clinic was designed to introduce newcomers to the fundamentals of rowing in a supportive and encouraging environment. Over the course of four days, split into two weekends (February 14-15 and February 21-22, 2026), participants received hands-on instruction both on land and water.

Key Components of the Clinic

  • Basic rowing techniques: Participants learned how to hold the oar, proper stroke mechanics, and timing.

  • Boat safety and handling: Understanding how to get in and out of the boat safely and how to balance the shell.

  • On-water practice: Time spent rowing on Lake Natoma allowed participants to apply their skills in real conditions.

  • Teamwork and communication: Rowing requires synchronization, so the clinic emphasized working together smoothly.

The clinic’s structure balanced technical instruction with plenty of time on the water, ensuring participants could build confidence gradually.

The Role of Coaches and Master Rowers

The success of the clinic relied heavily on the dedication of the coaching team and experienced rowers who volunteered their time.

  • Coach Jackie Snyder and John Stroud were out on launch boats throughout the sessions. They provided real-time feedback, demonstrated techniques, and motivated participants to relax and enjoy the process.

  • Master rowers assisted by rowing alongside beginners and helping with coxing duties. Their experience created a safe and encouraging atmosphere.

This hands-on support helped participants overcome initial nervousness and focus on learning effectively.

Why Lake Natoma is Ideal for Rowing

Lake Natoma offers calm waters and a scenic setting that make it perfect for both beginners and experienced rowers.

  • The lake’s sheltered environment reduces wind and wave interference.

  • The surrounding natural beauty adds to the enjoyment of being on the water.

  • Facilities at Lake Natoma support rowing activities with easy boat access and launch areas.

These factors contributed to a positive experience for everyone involved in the clinic.
